Your time, your routine
The split is a starting routine, not a proficiency assessment. Adjust it after trying practice questions. Your choices stay in this page; no account is needed.
A 20-minute daily JLPT routine
- 4 minutes of vocabulary: recall words before looking at the answer, then revisit mistakes.
- 4 minutes of grammar: answer a few questions and explain why your choice fits the sentence.
- 6 minutes of reading: read a short passage or notice. Check what the writer wants the reader to understand or do.
- 6 minutes of listening: listen once for the situation and again for the key detail. Check the transcript after attempting the question.
Pocket JLPT covers the vocabulary and grammar part of this routine. Pair it with reading and listening materials, and reserve a longer session for exam-format practice.
At the end of each week, review recurring mistakes and give the hardest skill more time. Repeat a question after a delay; remembering yesterday’s answer is different from understanding a new example.

Planning questions
How many hours do I need to pass?
Your starting ability, reading experience, and practice quality matter. This calculator totals the time you set aside; it does not predict a passing score or claim that a fixed number of hours is enough.
What if I only have ten minutes?
Keep the session small. Alternate longer reading and listening tasks across days, and make room for a longer practice session when you can.
Can I prepare using only quizzes?
Quizzes help you check vocabulary and grammar. Include reading, listening, and exam-format practice in your preparation as well.
